Schumacher strikes back!

Sun 14-09 2003

Five-time world champion Michael Schumacher regained the initiative in the Formula One title race when he fought off rival Juan Pablo Montoya to win the Italian Grand Prix here on Sunday.

It was the Ferrari star's first win in six races and it extended his lead in the championship to three points over the Williams driver with just two rounds left. Schumacher's fifth win of the season was achieved with a 5.294sec advantage over the Colombian. Rubens Barrichello was third in the second Ferrari ahead of McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, Marc Gene in a Williams, deputizing for the injured Ralf Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve in the BAR-Honda, Mark Webber in a Jaguar and Fernando Alonso in a Renault making up the points-scoring positions.

After resisting a fierce, wheel-to-wheel first lap challenge from Montoya, Schumacher stamped his authority on the early part of the race as he headed for his first win since the Canadian Grand Prix in June.

Schumacher, protecting a one-point lead in the championship over the Colombian at the start of the race, started from pole and held his lead into the testing first chicane and then kept out Montoya who mounted another first-lap challenge with the two men racing side by side.

Renault's Jarno Trulli, who started from sixth place, was a first-lap casualty when his car lost power while Justin Wilson in a Jaguar was forced to pit early after a start line collision with Fernando Alonso in the other Renault.

Wilson quickly retired as did Toyota's Cristiano Da Matta after an early spin. Schumacher reeled off a series of fastest laps before making his first pit stop after the 15th lap while Montoya followed him on the 16th.

The German's lead at the time of the stops was 4.9sec - at the 22nd lap, it was down to 2.4sec.
Britain's Jenson Button was the next driver forced out when his BAR-Honda lost transmission on the 25th lap.

Montoya pitted for the second time on lap 32 and stopped for nine seconds while Schumacher came in on lap 33.

After a 9.2sec stop, Schumacher re-emerged and took the lead again with a 1.6sec advantage with 18 laps left.

Minardi's Jos Verstappen in a Minardi and Toyota's Olivier Panis became the next men to drop out but at the front Schumacher was building up his lead which increased to 3.653sec with ten laps left.

McLaren's David Coulthard, who was running fifth, pulled out on lap 46 as his car's engine lost power in the finishing straight while, at the front, Schumacher increased his lead to over seven seconds.
