Puma keeps Minardi team safe

It is sometimes said that “clothes maketh the man,” but for the Minardi Cosworth pit crew who suddenly found themselves surrounded by flames during last Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, it was more a case of “clothes saveth the man”.
Thankfully, the dramatic fire that erupted during Gianmaria Bruni’s second scheduled pit stop was rapidly extinguished and there were no serious injuries. In the wake of the incident, however, the Faenza team wishes publicly to thank technical partner and official racewear supplier, Puma, for the integrity of the clothing that protected its personnel during the potentially dangerous situation that developed during the race.
Puma provides flame-resistant race suits, gloves, boots, balaclavas and underwear to Minardi Cosworth drivers, Gianmaria Bruni, Zsolt Baumgartner and Bas Leinders, as well as to all members of the Faenza squad’s pit crew. The company is also the official supplier of footwear and travel bags to the entire team.
“Racewear is one of those things that you tend to take for granted until something like this happens, and then you are reminded just what a critical role it plays in terms of overall safety in the modern motor racing environment,” observes Minardi Team Principal, Paul Stoddart. “We would therefore like to extend our sincere thanks to Puma for providing clothing to our crew that protected them very effectively on Sunday. It was obviously a major contributory factor in ensuring that no serious injuries were incurred by any of those involved.”
In fact, the only casualty in the incident was Bruni, who briefly experienced breathing difficulties after inhaling smoke and fumes from the fire. He quickly recovered, however, and departed Monza on Sunday evening disappointed that he had not been able to finish his ‘home’ Grand Prix, but grateful for the expertise that Puma incorporates into all its racewear.
