Former Formula One driver and team owner, Niki Lauda, has come out and said that former World Champion, Jacques Villeneuve’s drive at Shanghai on the weekend was ‘normal’. Jacques who has not raced in a Formula One car since his walk out on BAR after Indianapolis in 2003, looked physically exhausted, sweating furiously and his hands were shaking after the physical struggle of racing a Formula One car again. Lauda told UK newspaper Guardian: "Nothing special from Jacques on Sunday, but you have to bear in mind that Formula One is very competitive now."
In a recent press release from Renault after the race, Villeneuve admitted, “It was a tough race…I made a good start, but it took me too long to get into the rhythm of things.” Showing the increase on today’s Formula standards he added, “…the race pace used to be fairly slow at the beginning and would then increases. Now, it is a lot faster from the very first lap - and that just caught me out.” Villeneuve, who has also been contracted for Renault for the remaining two races for the season, is to replace Giancarlo Fisichella at Sauber next year, being signed on for a two-year deal.
