Hard race beckons as temperatures soar in Hungary

After finishing several laps down and 19th in last weekend’s German Grand Prix, BMW WilliamsF1 driver, Mark Webber, always knew he’d be up against it in today’s official qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. Given his early slot in qualifying (he was the second car out), 16th on the grid for tomorrow’s 70-lap race was the best Webber could have hoped for in the circumstances.

With the track temperature pushing 48 degrees celsius, the 28-year old Australian recorded a time of 1min 23.495s, and admitted a mistake in the final sector at turn 12 had cost him 4/10ths of a second. However, even taking that into account, there would have been little opportunity for an improved grid position as closest rival, Jacques Villeneuve, was more than 6/10ths faster with a time of 1min 22.866s. A more respectable grid position went to Webber’s German team-mate, Nick Heidfeld, who set the 12th fastest lap with a time of 1min 22.086s.

“It’s exactly where I expected to be – ahead of the Minardis and Jordans,” said Webber afterwards, “But, hopefully our race strategy will give us the opportunity to gain some more places in the stops. Even so, there’s no doubt that it’s going to be a very tough afternoon because of the layout of the track and the temperatures we have to endure.”

This weekend has seen BMW WilliamsF1 introducing more aero parts in an attempt to improve the performance of the FW27 before the three week summer break and test ban.

“It’s been quite a frustrating and tricky weekend for me because I haven’t been able to get confident with the car," said Webber, "so I’m expecting a tough race. But if we can be there at the finish, you never know what can happen. The Hungaroring track, like Monaco, is one that suits us a bit more than some of the others we’ll be going to shortly with their longer straights and quick corners, so it’s important for the team to get a good result here.”
